Seattle Police Officer Slaying Update
While at the 4th Annual Women Leaders in Law Enforcement Training Symposium held near San Francisco November 2-4, 2009 I had the opportunity to meet two Seattle Police Department Officers that were in attendance. These ladies, the Seattle Police Department, Seattle area police officers and officers worldwide mourn the loss of Officer Tim Brenton in the line of duty.
Our most recent IAWP conference was held in Seattle and many members of the Seattle Police Department were pivotal in the success of our conference. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the members of the Seattle PD, Seattle area police officers and the family of Officer Brenton.
Officer Brenton and his trainee Officer Britt Sweeney were shot in an blatant cold blooded shooting on October 31, 2009 (The holiday called Halloween in the US). Officer Brenton passed away from his wounds. Officer Britt Sweeney was hospitalized. Sweeney has told Seattle PD and her fellow officers that she plans to return to work. Good for you Britt.
Britt, though wounded, was able to fire at the suspect's vehicle as it drove away.
Officer Brenton's memorial service was held on Friday November 6, 2009 at the Key Arena in Seattle Washington. Brenton was married with two children ages 11 and 8 and had been a police officer with SPD for 9 years. Seattle PD lost their last officer in the line of duty in 2006.
The Suspect : Christopher Monfort is in-custody suspected of the murder of Officer Brenton. He is being called a "lone domestic terrorist" and is believed to be behind the arson of four police vehicles at the Seattle PD maintenance yard on October 22, 2009. Good job investigators.
Please keep Britt in your thoughts and prayers. Pray for a speedy recovery and a successful return to the ranks of law enforcement warriors.
